"MLS – What’s Next?"

Forum Ballroom

This discussion about what the MLS of today needs to look like and act like will begin with a session led by Matt Cohen of Clareity Consulting who believes that the re-definition of MLS and a re-missioning is essential to the continued relevance of MLS organizations as we know them. Included in Matt’s session will be:

  1. Bud Fogel, CEO of Chicago-based Midwest Real Estate Data a broker run MLS resulting from the merger of MAPMLS and MLSNI earlier this year,

  2. Michel Beauséjour, CEO of the Greater Montreal Real Estate Board and the Quebec Federation of Real Estate Boards

This session includes Shana Pearl, IT Director with Prudential California Realty and it includes:

  1. Mark Allen, Chief Executive Officer, Minneapolis Area Association of Realtors

  2. Barbara Kohl, Executive VP, West Penn Multiple Listing Service, Inc.

"MLS – New Faces/New Perspectives"

Forum Ballroom

The definition of insanity is to keep on doing the same things, the same way with an expectation of a different outcome. MLS’s across America and Canada are seeing young blood enter the industry and these “new faces” come with experience and skills honed in other parts of the economy that allow them to make informed contrasts and to reference the best practices of “different worlds”. Led by Marilyn Wilson, Partner in WAV Group, a leading industry consulting firm, this session will bring forward observations and recommendations from:

  1. Laura Cochran, VP of Marketing at MRIS

  2. Mike Bisping, Director of Customer Relations at RMLS of MN, Inc

  3. Anne St. Dennis, Manager, IR & SC, Montreal RE Board

"Public Records: Now You See Them, Now You Don't"
Sponsored by Listingbook

Forum Ballroom

Virtually every MLS in the country provides integrated Property Tax data in their MLS systems. Virtually every survey of MLS subscribers’ needs and wants rates the value of the Property Tax records function as among the most important services provided by their MLS. Very few MLS organizations fully understand that ongoing access to this extremely important ownership and characteristic data hangs by a thread and there are forces at work every day trying to cut that thread. In a time when the concept of a parcel-based information repository is contemplated by the NAR, it is timely to consider the challenges and need for vigilance and positive action that are necessary to make this a reality. Peter Shuttleworth (EVP, Metro MLS) will lead an examination of this very critical issue. Joining Peter will be panelists with extraordinary first hand knowledge of why the idea of Public Records remaining “public” is a never-ending battle.

  1. Yianni Pantis, Assistant General Counsel, First American Corporation

  2. Michael Klipper, Meyer, Klipper & Mohr, PLLC

Listing Syndication—A New Imperative for the Current Real
Estate Consumer or Just More Distraction?
Exploring the Strategic Implications

Forum Ballroom

A listing is not only “money in the bank” for brokers, but a very important marketing asset. More and more brokers are sending their listings to Web sites that attract large numbers of visitors whether because the sites are real estate specific or because they are trusted marketplaces (i.e. craigslist). This session brings together experts on helping brokers (and MLS’s) distribute their listings and those who receive and post listing content on Web sites that enthrall property-conscious consumers. Brian Larson (Larson/Sobotka Law Firm) will moderate this panel that includes:

  1. Kyle Berube, Regional Development Manager, Trulia Corporation

  2. Marty Frame, CEO, Cyberhomes

  3. Saul Klein, CEO, Point2 Technologies

"The Future of Virtual Brokerage - aftermath of the NAR/DOJ settlement"

Forum Ballroom

What will the future hold for virtual brokerages in the aftermath of the NAR/DOJ settlement? Some pundits speculate that VOWs are passé, and the settlement will have little impact. Elizabeth Sobotka (Larson/Sobotka Law Firm, Moderator) will conduct a discussion among industry leaders already anticipating the pending fallout from the settlement. The panelists will discuss implications of and opportunities arising from the settlement. Consumer expectations and interactions with brokerages will become richer; IDX and VOW vendors may face rapid technological challenges to keep up with the more open environment, and MLSs may have to take on policing functions beyond their current means.

2. Ira Luntz, Executive VP/COO, Listingbook
3. Joel MacIntosh, CEO, Wolfnet Technologies

MLS Collaborations – What’s the latest and which approach is right for you?

Forum Ballroom

Kevin McQueen, President of Focus Forward Consulting, leads a panel of experts who have “been there/done that” and/or are in the process of addressing MLS Collaboration through data sharing, aggregation or regionalization. This collaboration concept is being realized in every corner of the country and few initiatives are more important to the goal of assuring that the real estate professional is a consumer’s first and best choice for any and all property-related information, and the services that follow. What are the members saying? What is the problem we are trying to solve? Can we standardize the vocabulary somewhat to make it easier to understand? Learn from others that are actively engaged in various data sharing initiatives to determine which approach is right for you and your customers. Joining Kevin on this panel are:
1. Art Carter, CEO of MRMLS in Southern California (and a founding participant in CARETS)
2. Carl Demusz, CEO, NORMLS
3. Tracy Huotari, CEO, Duluth Area Association of Realtors
4. Cathy Holefelder, COO, Heartland MLS
